It's time to party

We are now only days away from Prince Rock Primary School’s 100 year birthday party and what a fabulous line up of activities we have planned.

On Thursday 5th and Friday 6th June the children will be performing plays to show case their learning about the last 100 years. Following the 2 afternoon              performances we will be taking ex-pupils and staff on tours of the school. Any left over tickets for the 3 performances will be available on a first come first serve  basis from the school office after half term.

Prince Rock Primary School was actually opened on 9th June 1908.  At 10.30am on Monday 9th June 2008 the oldest living pupil we’ve managed to contact, Alfie Walters 86 and 1 of our youngest 4 year old Reception pupils will officially unveil the new commemorative mosaic that all our children have all been involved in making.

Following the official business of the day the partying will begin! Before our ‘street party’ style lunch in the downstairs hall, will have a Punch and Judy show which should be brilliant. After lunch the children will be entertained by a magician, jugglers, karaoke, donkeys and we will also have bowling, maypole dancing, a bouncy castle and an ice cream van – and it’s all free!!! If it’s sunny this will all take place in the playground but if it’s raining we will use various rooms inside. Monday’s party is very much for the children but parents are welcome to join in the fun for the last half an hour of the afternoon.

Finally on Friday 13th June the ‘friends group’ are holding a ‘ticket only’ evening social event for ex pupils and staff. If you are an ex pupil and you would like to know more about this event please contact Mrs Smith in the school office for further       details.

I hope you all have a great half term.

Reading Recovery at Prince Rock Primary

Prince Rock Primary School have successfully bid for some new additional funding to employ a specialist reading recovery teacher to support the teaching of reading in the infants. We are currently in the process of advertising for this new ½ time teacher and we will let you know who we have appointed in the very near future.

Building Learning Power

We have now told you about 3 of our 4 T’s or ‘Learning Powers’ and this month we will finish with the last one. So far we have told you about Trying Tools and Together but this month we finish with ‘Thinking’. Our last learning power is ‘thinking’. This involves being able to plan an activity and consider what time and         resources you will need. It is about being flexible and being able to change what you were going to do in light of mistakes or things that have gone wrong. A very important part of this skill for learners is the ability to remember key points and be able to use them the next day, week, month or year. In addition, the children will become better at knowing what type of learners they are – how they learn best. This might be by listening, by seeing or by doing things and is likely to be a combination of all three. So that’s all 4 learning powers: together, trying, tools and thinking. Please continue to encourage your children to develop these important skills.

Some BIG news from the School council

At the last 2 meetings of the school council the issue of break time snacks has been on the agenda following the end of our East End Free Fruit funding. The children’s elected               representatives have now decided at 2 consecutive meetings that children should only be        allowed fruit or vegetables for a snack at break time.

The children have decided this and after half term nothing else such as crisps will be allowed for a snack at break time apart from fruit or vegetables . Years R 1 and 2 will continue to receive free fruit as part of the government’s Healthy eating initiative.

Please remember this ‘Healthy School’ idea is the children’s and we would ask you to respect their decision.

Lunchtime fun

After half term Sutton Play will be running fun play activities for the children during 4 of the 5 lunch breaks. Why not join them over half term for more fun in the park at Astor Playing fields?

Mobiles

The children are not allowed to have mobile phones in school. There is no reason for them to need them during the school day and we will confiscate them if we find them. Please make sure that you do not allow your children to bring a mobile phone in to school. If you need to contact your children or they need to contact you it can be done through the school office in the usual way. Please make sure you let us know if you change your phone number. We are still having great difficulty contacting some parents and if your child is unwell or injured then not being able to contact you can be very, very stressful for them.
