22 Oct 2004 - Prince Rock Primary School (Issue 2)
FREE FRUIT AT PRINCE ROCK!!
After half term, Prince Rock Primary School will be offering FREE fruit, every day at break time, for every one of our 183 pupils. Children will be able to choose from a range which will hopefully include apples, oranges, pears, bananas and other seasonal fruits. This exciting project is part-funded by a general government grant which caters for our infants, and funding through the East End Healthy Living Initiative for our juniors.
We are not banning other snacks at break time. However, as the fruit is both free and healthy, we will be strongly encouraging the children to choose this instead. We have been trialling the free fruit idea at our Breakfast and After-School clubs for some time now and after initial reservations, all the children are now regularly making healthy choices and enjoying fruit.
We hope you will be able to support us in encouraging your children to make a healthy fruit choice at break time and leave any chocolate or crisp snacks for their lunch boxes. The first free fruit will be available from
Thursday 18th November. More details to follow after half term.
If you have any queries regarding the scheme, please contact Miss Evans (our School Fruit Co-ordinator) or Mr Spry.
S Spry - Headteacher
We are currently collecting Nestlç Box Tops For Education from Nestlç cereal packets, Persil Stars, which will allow us to send off for art materials for the children to use in school and minibus tokens from the Evening Herald. If you have any of these tokens, please bring them into school.
The school dentist will be in on Friday 19th November to give check-ups for the whole school. If any parents do not want their children screened please let the office know as soon as possible
Would parents please remember to inform Miss Cumbes or Miss James if their children are going to be absent from Breakfast Club or After School Club. Thank you parents who have informed us already when their children have been away.

A number of charities have combined together to try and get hold of some old disused shoes for victims of landmines in war-torn parts of the world. If you have any old shoes you no longer want, please bring them into school on Monday 1st or Tuesday 2nd November. Thank you.
A massive thanks for such a quick and full response to the questionnaire about home/school communication we sent out recently. The response was excellent; over 60% of families responded and we are currently collating all the information and views you so kindly provided, including those from the children, staff and governors. A parents meeting to discuss your views has been fixed for Tuesday 9th November at 5pm. Further details via an open letter will be with you shortly after half term. JW
Thanks for all your help with collecting the Tesco vouchers. We have used them to buy some fantastic new headphones for our computers. Thank you!
Earlier this month two teams of runners from Prince Rock Primary took part in a Lipson cross-country tournament against eight other local schools. In the team tournament, both our boys and our girls came in second, narrowly failing to win the trophy. In the individual races RHYS and LAUREN both finished third. All the runners ran superbly over a very tough course and were a real credit to the school.
Thank you for your support with the Harvest appeal. Four large food parcels are now on their way to European refugees. Your help is very much appreciated.
We currently have space on our list of occasional Meal Time Assistants (MTAs) to help out when our regular staff are ill, on holiday, etc. If you're interested in joining our list please call Mrs Smith in the office.
A reminder to all parents: our new/nearly new uniform shop is open every Monday from 3.15 - 3.45 in the canteen.

HOW THE CAT LEARNT HIS LESSON
Once, when the world was so new and all, there lived two cats called Smudge and Felix. Smudge was a cat that never did what he was told. Felix was a wise cat who tried to help Smudge behave. There was also a girl who lived with them called Natasha. They all lived in a two-bedroom house; at the end of the house the floorboards were loose.
One day when Felix was napping on the armchair, Smudge threw a ball which hit the TV. The TV exploded! Felix woke up with a start. "What on earth did you do?" Smudge said, "Nothing." Felix replied, "Well you must have done something to make the TV explode." They called Natasha to help them carry the TV out to the backyard. They walked out of the front room but forgot all about the loose floorboards. "Meeeeooooowwww!" cried Smudge. He had fallen down the hole in the middle of the loose floorboards. They shouted, "SMUDGE!!" but no-one replied. "What's happened to Smudge?" asked Natasha. "It's his own stupid fault for throwing the ball in the first place," Felix said. "We're going down to find him." Natasha replied.
After putting the TV outside, Felix and Natasha picked up the ladder. Crash! Bang! Smash! They lowered the ladder into the hole. They climbed down and started to search for Smudge. It was dark, smell, damp and small and they were very scared. A few minutes later they found Smudge and took him back up the front room. "You?re safe now," said Felix and Natasha, "but we hope you"ve learnt your lesson about throwing balls in the house because you might hurt yourself and others."
And that is how the cat learnt his lesson.
