20 Nov 2004 - Prince Rock Primary School Issue 3

WILL THE SCHOOL BE HERE IN 2010?

Some of you may have heard about Plymouth City Council's 'Ideas for Change'
10-year school re-organisation plan. This is an attempt by the Authority to deal with a falling birth rate and a projected citywide loss of 2000 primary school aged places by 2010. In reality this is likely to mean various school site closures, amalgamations and reorganisations in certain parts of Plymouth. More details of the plans are available on line at http://www.plymouth.gov.uk and click on the Hot Link - 'School Improvement Plan'.

Prince Rock Primary School is in fact in the opposite situation to most of Plymouth's schools because we actually have a rising roll and not enough space for the children who want to come here! Alongside the 'Ideas for Change' plan there is also a study taking place on the future feasibility of Plymouth's Victorian and Edwardian school buildings. Prince Rock Primary School is of course very much involved in this study. A company has just been chosen to carry out this work and they will be contacting you as parents, governors and general members of the local community to find out your views some time between now and Christmas.
In very simple terms there are four basic options facing us:

1. Do nothing (quite likely in the short term)
2. Refurbish (possibly the top floor/lifts etc in the long term)
3. Knock down and rebuild on the same site (unlikely here)
4. Knock down or sell off and rebuild on a different site (Uncertain?)

There are of course various pros and cons to each of these options and nothing is very likely to happen immediately. In addition, as you might expect, much will depend on resources, but your views are vitally important and they will be a key influencing factor. As soon as I have any more information on how you can express your views to the organisation carrying out the study I will of course let you know straight away. Whatever way the debate goes I believe that the future for Prince Rock Primary School is very exciting.

This really is your chance to help shape the future.

The school's fruit & vegetable scheme is now up and running and most of the children are now enjoying their daily piece of fresh fruit/veg. Just before we started the scheme we surveyed break time snacking habits and discovered the following (some children had more than one snack):
Crisps/savoury snacks 103
Fruit 74
Chocolate/biscuits, etc 29
Others, i.e., yoghurt/cheese, etc 5
No snack 5
We will do this survey again after Christmas to see how our break time snack eating habits have changed. Watch this space???

Thanks for all your support with the BOOK FAIR. Loads of you have bought some fantastic books for your children and we got over £90 worth of free books for the school too. Thank you.

We had a great day last Friday and raised £144.40 from the mufti and an amazing £92.33 from the copper Pudsey. This was an incredible effort. Thank you very much indeed.

If you think your child may be eligible for free school meals but they are currently having a packed lunch, please could you pop into the school office and fill in the forms anyway. Firstly, this enables us to provide your child with a meal if a packed lunch is forgotten and secondly it helps the school to access more resources and money than we might otherwise be able to claim, so please come in and fill in the form if you think you may be eligible.

On Wednesday 1st December we will be hosting Theatre Alibi's Christmas rendition of 'The Wild One'. In previous years with this theatre group have been brilliant so we hope you will be able to support the event. We are asking for a voluntary contribution of £1.60.

This year we came a very creditable 8th in the boys and 10th in the girls cross country tournaments at Brickfields. The children who ran were:
Rhys, Jamie, Jordan, Dale, Brandon, Josh, Lauren, Zoe, Rhian, Shauna, Hayley.

Could parents please remember not to smoke on school grounds. We operate a no-smoking policy throughout the premises, including the car park, below the footbridge and the seating area in the KS2 (junior) playground.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THE SCHOOL CHRISMAS DINNER MONEY (£1.45 per child) NEEDS TO BE BROUGHT IN ON MONDAY 6TH DECEMBER.

From 2.00 - 3.30 p.m. on Monday 13th December all parents of Years R, 1 and 2 are warmly invited to join the infant children and teachers for a Christmas craft afternoon, making some Christmas goodies. We look forward to seeing you there.

This year's Christmas performance is entitled 'Christmas Around The World'. Due to an increase in our numbers, there will be three performances this year; 2pm and 7pm on Thursday 16th and 2pm on Friday 17th December. There is a maximum of 70 tickets per show and these are available on a first come first served basis from tomorrow (see Mrs Smith). Initially there will be a maximum of two tickets per family.
