27 Sep 2005 - Prince Rock Primary School
We would like to welcome everybody back to Prince Rock Primary School after the summer holidays. We hope you had a fantastic summer and that you enjoyed the sun. We would also like to extend a very warm welcome to all our new children joining us for the first time. By the time you read this your children will hopefully have settled in to their new classes. If you have any problems or questions at all about your new class or school in general, please don't hesitate to speak to your child's teacher or myself. We hope you all have a great term.
Three top awards for Prince Rock Primary
During the final week of last term Prince Rock Primary School was awarded a trio of fantastic accolades. Firstly, we were awarded 'Healthy Schools' status in recognition of our work in developing a range of things including healthy eating, daily physical activity and extra curricular sports clubs. We were also recognised as being an 'Investor in People'. This was in recognition of work the school does in areas such as training and developing existing staff and inducting new staff. Last but not least, OFSTED visited the school on the final Tuesday of term to inspect our breakfast and after school provision. They rated us as good in all areas. These awards and reports really are impressive and clearly reflect the excellent work that goes on at Prince Rock Primary School. A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make it happen. Well done.

D.P.A., P.P.A. and enrichment............................
Last term we introduced D.P.A. (Daily Physical Activity) to all our children in the mornings as a fun and healthy way to start the school day. When our big CD player is fixed we will continue to do this outside in the playground. However, in the meantime D.P.A. will take place in the 2 school halls after registration. P.P.A. stands for Planning, Preparation and Assessment. This is a new government initiative which gives all teachers 10% non contact time away from teaching their classes to plan, prepare and assess. Schools are covering this 10% in different ways but we have decided to use the opportunity to enrich the curriculum by offering new and exciting additional activities for our children. Miss Atwell will be teaching music, Miss Cowan will be teaching Spanish and Mr. Spry will be coaching various sporting skills, including football. In addition, Mrs Jobe, Ms Bird and Mrs Pomeroy will be taking groups for art, sewing and cookery respectively. These activities are spread throughout the school and your children will soon be able to tell you which activities they are accessing at the moment. What you may notice, though, is that one of the above teachers brings your children out to you at the end of the school day. If you have any questions about exactly how this affects your child then please see your child?s class teacher.
Tesco sport vouchers
We have started collecting the Tesco sport vouchers. Please pass them in to the school office or your child?s class teacher if you have any. Thank you. More details on the enclosed leaflet.
Welcome
Prince Rock primary School would like to extend a very warm welcome to Mr Cooper how has joined us from Hyde Park Infants. Mr. Cooper is teaching in our year 2 class. Welcome to Prince Rock.
The Verandah
If you have ventured in to the junior playground this term you may have noticed that our verandah has been repaired. This is the most visible of a number of minor school repairs taking place at the moment.
Medicines
If your child has asthma then please make sure
the appropriate medication and completed consent forms
are in school. We had a number of very distressing incidents towards the end
of last term when children suffering attacks had no inhalers in school. If your
child is on any other medication or has any allergies that we need to know about could you please let your child?s class teacher and Mrs Smith in the office know as soon as possible.
Phone numbers
Please let us know about any changes of phone number, especially
mobiles and emergency contact numbers, as soon as possible. If your child is going to be absent from school could you please phone the school office by 10.00 am on the day of absence.
Holidays
If you need to take a holiday in school time please obtain a holiday consent form from the school office. Please try not to take your children out of school in term time as it can affect their school work. Please note that permission for holiday will definitely not be granted in the week of the school SAT?s and school tests, next May 8th - 12th 2006.
Clubs
Clubs will be starting again over the next couple of weeks. There are some changes to the clubs we are offering this term, which reflect staffing changes. We are once again offering a huge choice of free lunchtime and after school activities. Numbers are limited and for obvious reasons not all classes will get the same choice. However, there should be something of interest for most children and if it isn?t available for their class this term or year then it will probably be an option for them in a future term or year. Please remember that we need a signed consent form for any after school activity, but not lunchtimes. A separate letter will follow very soon, but we are hoping to run clubs in art
( x2) , judo, football, netball, general fitness, guitars, sewing ( x 2) , poetry, computers, science, board games, glockenspiel, puzzles and general music. What a choice!!!!
Children?s work
Next month and in all future editions of the newsletter we hope to carry examples of the
children?s work. Watch this space!
Uniform Shop
This will now run from 3.30 - 3.45 pm on Monday afternoons, either just in side
or just outside the junior entrance to the school.
This is a very practical art based series of fun sessions run by the Plymouth family and parent learning service. This term it will be open to children in reception and year 1 and it will take place on a Wednesday morning between 9.30 and 11.30am. The sessions are planned for children and parents working together, so your child will only be able to attend if a parent / carer is able to join them. We ran a similar programme last year and it was a resounding success. Phone Maz on 256978 or see Miss Prothero or Miss Evans for more details.
Class assemblies
This term we will NOT be holding class assemblies. Firstly class teachers are getting to know their classes and cracking on with school work, and secondly we are planning a big Christmas show this year where every class will do their own mini performance. The Christmas break and hence the performance is early this year and so rehearsals for this will be starting early in November. You will of course be welcome to the Christmas show and the class assemblies that will resume again on Friday mornings in the spring term. This term the children will still have opportunities to show their work to the other children at various times. We look forward to seeing you at the Christmas show.
Musical Instruments
If you have any unwanted musical instruments hiding away at home that you no longer use and would like to donate to us, could you please send them into school. Miss Attwell our music coordinator will be able to put them to great use.
Governors
There is a vacancy for a Parent Governor, if you are interested please see Mr Spry.
